Ribbon Cutting Today At Boeing 787 Final Assembly Plant

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will be joined by Boeing officials to officially open the new 787 Dreamliner Final Assembly Plant today. The $750 million plant represents the largest private industrial development in the history of South Carolina. The Boeing plant is at the center of a dispute between the National Labor Relations Board and Boeing. The NLRB is trying to the require Boeing to move 787 production back to Seattle, essentially closing the South Carolina plant.

Congress Coming To Charleston

Congress is coming to Charleston. While this may make most run for the hills, a congressional committee is coming to North Charleston to hold a hearing on the federal labor lawsuit threatening the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner plant. The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government is planning to hold the hearing in North Charleston on June 17. Chairman Darrell Issa, R-California, has requested that the NRLB general Counsel attend the hearing; however, the NRLB counsel has declined to attend due to the pending litigation. In this Boeing photo, the 747-8i can been seen from the cockpit of the 787 Dreamliner mid-flight. This beautiful photo was posted by Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, to his blog. Mr. Tinesth was outlining Boeing plans for the planes to be displayed at the 2011 Paris Air Show. In addition to the first 787 Dreamliner, ZA001, and the 747-8i Intercontinental, Boeing is also planning to display a Qatar Airways 777-200LR, an Air Berlin 737-700, and the 747-8 Freighter. Boeing is planning on flying both the 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8i Intercontinental to the Paris Air Show that begins on June 20. In addition to the two flag ship products, the air frame maker will also display the 787-8 Freighter, a Qatar Airways 777-200LR (the longest range airliner in the world), an Air Berlin 737-700 outfitted with the new Sky interior, as well as the the C-17 Globemaster III and other military products.

Representatives Joe Wilson and Trey Gowdy have published an opinion piece in Politico, which has also been listed on the Seattle Post website. In the piece Reps. Wilson and Gowdy lay out a defense of Boeing's decision to locate the second 787 Dreamliner Final Assembly plant in Charleston, South Carolina and point out the federal over reach of the NLRB. It is worth a read.

The Seattle Post is reporting that Representative Tim Scott asked President Obama to call off the NLRB during the meeting between the Administration and GOP members of Congress on Wednesday. Scott suggested that if President Obama is interested in growing the economy, the federal government should stop meddling in right-to-work states like South Carolina. The NLRB is trying to prevent Boeing from opening its new 787 Dreamliner production facility in Charleston.
